Conflict in Sudan

Sudan was ruled by Britain and Egypt until 1956. Since then many groups in Sudan have tried to rule the whole country. But no one has been successful.

The Christian people in the south and the Muslim people in the north have been fighting for power. But also, political groups within each region have fought each other. This fighting has killed over one million people.

The chaos of war means Sudan is short of food. Famine is widespread. Thousands of people have fled their homes and now live as refugees in neighbouring countries. Today the fighting continues in Sudan.
