Conflict in Somalia

In the late 19th Century, Italy, France, Ethiopia and Britain ruled separate areas of Somalia. Italy and Britain gave their areas independence in 1960. These areas became the Somali Republic.

In 1969, Mohammed Siad Barre became leader. He wanted all areas where Somalis lived to be part of one country. In 1977, Somalia fought with Ethiopia to get some land, but they lost.

Clans in Somalia wanted to get rid of Siad Barre as leader. A war in Somalia began in 1990. Siad Barre was thrown out the next year. More than 8000 people died in the war and there were hundreds of thousands of refugees.
