New Zealand and Conflict

The Taliban government in Afghanistan were very strict with people. Women were not allowed jobs and girls weren't allowed to go to school. Strict Muslim laws were enforced in the country. Many groups of people who were opposed to the Taliban fought the government. A lot of Afghan people were killed in the civil war. Many refugees escaped.

Some of the refugees made their way to Australia. But in 2001, a boat full of refugees sank on its way from Indonesia to Australia. A Norwegian ship, called the Tampa, picked up the refugees. Australia refused to accept the refugees. About 400 refugees had nowhere to go.

The United Nations asked New Zealand to help. About 150 of the refugees were accepted into New Zealand.
